About the Conference


The 1st International Conference and Scientific Exhibition on Living Materials Systems | Energy Autonomy – Adaptivity – Longevity – Societal Implications was a big success. We enjoyed four days filled with insightful talks, poster sessions, discussions and fun social activities at the University of Freiburg.

The Cluster of Excellence livMatS at University of Freiburg, Germany, hosted the
1st International Conference and Scientific Exhibition on Living Materials Systems | Energy Autonomy – Adaptivity – Longevity – Societal Implications. It took place from March 21 to 24, 2023.

The conference brought together international researchers from various scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, engineering, materials sciences, philosophy, psychology, and sustainability for an in-depth exchange of knowledge with respect to materials systems exhibiting life-like properties and functions.


Conference topics

The conference covered topics associated with the energy autonomy, adaptivity and longevity of living materials systems. It was also dedicated to presenting possible technical applications as proof-of-concept demonstrators or prototypes. The conference further addressed societal challenges related to sustainability, psychological impacts, and philosophical considerations, including acceptance and ethical approval of living materials systems.

Speakers

The program of the conference included invited talks given by leading interntional experts, selected shorter talks, and poster sessions.
